The Penguin Café Orchestra / Still Life at the Penguin Café
(1991)
Inspired in 1972 to create the Penguin Café Orchestra while recovering from a bad meal, composer Simon Jeffes--known for his work with The Sex Pistols--aimed to reach an audience adventurous enough to appreciate "Wilson Pickett, Beethoven, The Rolling Stones, choral music from West Africa," and other diverse groups and genres. This documentary celebrates Jeffes' innovative career. The program also includes the ballet "Still Life at the Penguin Café," as Jeffes joins choreographer Bintley in presenting an inventive and bravura show with an ecological theme that deals with endangered species. 90 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English PCM stereo; Subtitles: French, German, Spanish.
