A young girl (Rebecca Harrell Tickell) discovers a wounded reindeer that she recognizes as the fabled member of Santa's sleigh team and sneaks him home to her family's farm in order to nurse him back to health. When her father (Sam Elliott)─a poor farmer─learns about "Prancer," he decides there's money to be made by selling the animal to the local butcher as an advertising display.
