While his literary gift may have long since abandoned rumpled, hard-drinking, womanizing Scottish poet Gowan McGland (Tom Conti), his willingness to take a lecture fee has not. During a typically disastrous sojourn to a New England college town, he manages to stun his hosts with his outrageous deportment, until his encounter with a striking young local (a debuting Kelly McGillis) makes him rethink his priorities.
