Recently deceased cop Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) is brought back to life to serve on the R.I.P.D. (the Rest in Peace Department), a police outfit dedicated to tracking down undead criminals who walk among the living. Trained by grizzled R.I.P.D. veteran Roy Pulsipher (Jeff Bridges), Nick uses his new job as a means to exact revenge on the man who killed him.
