In the British moorlands, a young boy (Mark Lester)─mute since a toddler, and unreachable by his parents─finds his life changed when he makes a friend of a kindly retired soldier (John Mills) who shares his love of nature. With the old man's help, the lad sets out to catch and tame a wild albino pony, and learns hard lessons in responsibility along the way.
