Fresh off a stint in a mental hospital, upbeat but repressed office worker Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) takes a job as personal assistant to tightly-wound lawyer Mr. Grey (James Spader). When her typing errors elicit a swift and kinky reprimand from Mr. Grey, Lee begins making mistakes on purpose, turning their relationship into a full-blown leap into sadomasochism.
