Mister Roberts (1955)
Henry Fonda re-created his Broadway stage role in this classic comedy/drama about the dehumanizing aspects of war. On board a WWII supply ship in the Pacific, cargo officer Doug Roberts (Fonda) longs for combat duty, but in the meantime serves as a buffer between the men and their tyrannical captain (James Cagney). With William Powell as the ship's doctor and Best Supporting Actor Oscar-winner Jack Lemmon as Ensign Pulver. 122 min. C/Rtg: NR
No Time For Sergeants (1958)
Classic comedy, based on Ira Levin's play, stars Andy Griffith (reprising a role he first played on TV and Broadway) as Will Stockdale, an oblivious country bumpkin from Georgia who's brimming with pride after being drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps. However, Will's eager efforts soon run him afoul of his commanding officer (Myron McCormick), and he finds himself in endless mishaps along with his cohorts. Co-stars Nick Adams, Murray Hamilton, Don Knotts. 119 min. BW/Rtg: NR
