Continuing the tradition of strong-willed sitcom heroines like Mary Richards, Channing portrays the recently divorced Susan Hughes in 1979’s "Stockard Channing in Just Friends," a sitcom following her trials and tribulations in Los Angeles. Gerrit Graham, Mimi Kennedy, and Sydney Goldsmith co-star. After the first season, the program was rechristened "The Stockard Channing Show" in 1980, with Channing becoming Susan Goodenow, co-star Goldsmith returning, and Ron Silver and Max Showalter added to the cast.
