Wealthy socialite Susan Trexel (Joan Crawford) returns home from Europe with a new religious fervor that quickly becomes an all-consuming obsession. Insisting that everyone in her life change to accommodate her, Susan runs the risk of alienating her alcoholic husband (Fredric March), her young daughter, and her friends.
