FOOL IN A BUBBLE takes audiences on Syd Kitchen's journey from apartheid to modern South Africa to New York. Syd is a fifty-eight year-old white South African musician and poet of Saxon descent, born under apartheid. He continues to be a vital force in the South African artistic community for over thirty years. This film explores the power of music and poetry as a redemptive force, both personally and politically. Syd is an anomaly; his artistic expressions embody both the struggle and bridge to freedom of his troubled nation. He is a legend in South Africa earning a cult-like status, particularly in his hometown of Durban. In 2009 he performed at the 20th Anniversary of Splashy Fen Music Festival in Kwa-Zulu Natal where he was honored on-stage as a symbol of South African music as the only artist to play there every year since it's inception. Back in the 1960s, Kitchen collaborated with black and colored South African artists like Madala Kunene of 'Bafo Bafo' and performed at the very first venues to feature black, white, and colored artists together. He is the product of his ancestors' pursuit of freedom, as told in his songs' Settler' 'My forefather came from across the sea, he had in his heart a need to be free...and all my life I've been lost in his history, all my life I've felt so alone...I offer love, I ask redemption'. Unique to Syd and new to most audiences, are the specific challenges posed by his identity as a white South African. His life is full of stigma and identity is fraught with irony and conflict. He has remained steadfast in his career despite financial, physical, and psychological challenges. His music and poetry is eclectic, drawing influence's from Afrikaans, Zulu, Indian, Folk, Rock and Jazz. Ultimately, FOOL IN A BUBBLE conveys a message of hope through music, language and power of the human spirit to persevere and triumph. Syd is granted an opportunity to visit New York to record an album with musicians from Paul Simon's Graceland. His first trip ends up frustrating breaking into an entirely new place where he is unknown. Syd leaves disillusioned and sinks back deeper into his own personal struggles. Back in South Africa, Syd suffers a near death car accident and continues drinking harder then ever, prompting an intervention from a close friend. As a result Syd starts confronting his wounds and transforming himself. He gets married and prepares for a second trip to New York City to launch the album. In New York, Syd is shocked by a surprise reunion with his brother lives in the UK. The two played together in the 70's as The Kitchen Brothers, South Africa's foremost acoustic duo. While launching FOOL IN A BUBBLE, Syd invites his brother on-stage to perform their hit Midnight to a rousing audience response. Syd also plays to folk legend Pete Seeger and lays down the foundation for future development of his career and life in New York.
