With her husband Chris (Robert Ryan) in combat overseas, and the bills coming due regardless, defense plant worker Jo Jones (Ginger Rogers) sells a trio of similarly situated colleagues (Ruth Hussey, Kim Hunter, Patricia Collinge) on splitting a household, and their expenses, for the duration.
