The Divine Sarah Bernhardt chronicles the remarkable life and passionate relationships of French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt, one of the world's first international celebrities. We follow Bernhardt (a magnetic Sandrine Kiberlain) through different episodes of her life, from the height of her fame as a free-spirited artist to her tumultuous relationship with fellow actor Lucien Guitry (Laurent Lafitte). Set against the opulent backdrop of Parisian theatres in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the film explores Bernhardt's theatrical genius, scandalous affairs, and convention-defying views on love, politics, and gender. Rather than a standard chronological biopic, the film offers a kaleidoscopic portrait of a chameleon-like artist whose life was as dramatic and theatrical as the roles she embodied on stage.
