Warsaw, 1945: Having volunteered to help treat and repatriate her countrymen, young French Red Cross nurse Mathilde Beaulieu (Lou de Laâge) is begged by a Polish nun (Joanna Kulig) to make a covert visit of mercy to her convent. Finding several of the sisters pregnant--from sexual assaults by Russian forces--Mathilde is challenged to aid her new charges through their guilt and shame, and deal with her superiors’ dictates to not get involved.
