Widowed farmer Zachary Hallock (Joel McCrea) had enough problems trying to till his new homestead alongside his young son Joshua (Jimmy Hunt), and told the neighbors he couldn't be bothered to join the vigilante group that was the community's sole protection against outlaw Jonah Varden (Alex Nicol) and his gang.
