With Pope Pius XIII (Jude Law) comatose in the wake of a heart attack, the Holy See is faced with the need to name a successor--and the controversy certain to come in light of Pius’ devoted following. The machinations that follow elevate the British intellectual Sir John Brannox (John Malkovich) to coronation as John Paul III, but his reign would prove complicated--most of all by Pius’ recovery.
