Charlotte Lovell (Bette Davis) wanted to give comfort to Clem (George Brent), the jilted ex-fiancé of her cousin Delia (Miriam Hopkins), before his fateful departure for the Civil War...and she left town soon after to open an orphanage. Years later, Charlotte makes the mistake of admitting to Delia that her favorite charge is her daughter by Clem--and has to stand by helplessly as her catty relation takes control of the girl’s upbringing. Classic tearjerker, famed for its stars' rivalry off-screen as well as on, co-stars Jane Bryan, Jerome Cowan, Donald Crisp, James Stephenson. 95 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: English, French.
