Baby Take A Bow (1934)
The first starring vehicle for Shirley Temple was a musical drama about an ex-con struggling to stay straight and the adorable daughter who keeps him away from shady criminals and a persistent cop. James Dunn and Claire Trevor co-star. 74 min. BW&C/Rtg: PG
Bright Eyes (1934)
Irresistible orphan Shirley Temple charms a rich old coot, his lovely niece and an adventurous flyer who compete for adoption rights. This is the movie that features America’s Sweetheart doing her classic rendition of "On the Good Ship Lollipop." With Jane Darwell, James Dunn. 84 min. BW&C/Rtg: PG
Stowaway (1936)
This is the film where Shirley Temple "speaks and sings Chinese," according to the ads. Shirley portrays Ching-Ching, the ward of a group of murdered missionaries in China, who accidentally stows aboard an ocean liner bound for America. Along the way she’s adopted by playboy Tommy Randall (Robert Young) and his wife (Alice Faye), sings "I Wanna Go to the Zoo" and "That’s What I Want for Christmas," and imitates Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor! 87 min. BW/Rtg: G
Wee Willie Winkie (1937)
Orphan Shirley Temple lives in colonial India with Granddad and plays mascot to British troops in her own pint-sized uniform. A Kipling-based adventure well-suited to the talents of director John Ford, with plenty of teary sentiment for the dimpled darling. Co-stars Victor McLaglen. 100 min. BW/Rtg: PG
Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm (1938)
Distantly related to Kate Douglas Wiggin’s 1903 novel, this musical comedy stars Shirley Temple as Rebecca Winstead, a talented orphan (natch!) who goes to live with her aunt and is discovered by a talent scout neighbor (Randolph Scott) hoping to make her a big radio singing star. Shirley sings "An Old Straw Hat" and a medley of previous Temple tunes, including "On the Good Ship Lollipop," "Animal Crackers in My Soup," "Goodnight, My Love." Helen Westley, William Demarest, Bill Robinson co-star. 80 min. BW&C/Rtg: G
Young People (1940)
Filmdom’s pluckiest orphan, Shirley Temple, finds herself parentless once again, until retiring vaudevillians Jack Oakie and Charlotte Greenwood adopt her. The family moves to a small town that doesn’t take to "show folk," but Shirley sets out to change their feelings. Songs include "Tra-La-La," "Fifth Avenue" and the title tune. 79 min. BW/Rtg: G
