The Fall Of The House Of Usher (1960)
The first of director Roger Corman's screen adaptations of the works of Edgar Allan Poe was this chiller, with a script by Richard Matheson. Vincent Price is a study in madness as Roderick Usher, a man set on stopping his family's heritage of insanity, even if it means burying his own sister alive! With Myrna Fahey, Mark Damon. AKA: "House of Usher." 80 min. C/Rtg: NR
The Pit And The Pendulum (1961)
Francis Barnard’s (John Kerr) search for the truth behind his sister’s death leads him into a medieval torture chamber and the demented schemes of brother-in-law Nicholas Medina (Vincent Price). Chilling entry in director Roger Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe series also stars Barbara Steele, Luana Anders. 80 min. C/Rtg: NR
The Haunted Palace (1963)
As the heir to the title estate, Charles Dexter Ward (Vincent Price) begins carrying out his evil ancestor’s (also played by Price) plans of human sacrifices and creating a race of horrifying mutants. Roger Corman’s chilling adaptation of the Poe story also stars Debra Paget and Lon Chaney, Jr. 93 min. C/Rtg: NR
The Masque Of The Red Death (1964)
Roger Corman directed this lurid shocker, based on the Edgar Allan Poe story. Vincent Price stars as the amoral, Satan-worshipping medieval Prince Prospero, who holds an elegant ball for his sadistic friends while a plague ravages the land. But Prospero is soon stunned and horrified by the appearance of an uninvited guest...Death himself. Hazel Court, Jane Asher, David Weston, Nigel Green, Patrick Magee also star. Theatrical version; 88 min./Extended cut; 89 min. C/Rtg: NR
Witchfinder General (xxxx)
Lurid chiller stars Vincent Price as the real-life Matthew Hopkins, a corrupt lawyer-turned-self-appointed "Witch Finder General" in 17th-century England, who uses his power to blackmail innocent women, until the fiancé of a murdered victim tracks him down for revenge. Moody tale of depravity and terror based on the novel by Ronald Bassett also stars Ian Ogilvy, Hillary Dwyer; Michael Reeves directs. AKA: "The Conqueror Worm." 87 min. C/Rtg: NR
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
Vincent Price shines in his most sinister role, as that of Dr. Anton Phibes, a mad medico who seeks revenge on the fellow physicians who failed to save his wife on the operating table. His method of killing each victim, based on the Old Testament plagues of Egypt (bees, locusts, hail, etc.), makes for gruesomely witty fun. Horrific humdinger from the U.K. also stars Joseph Cotten, Terry-Thomas, Peter Jeffrey, and Virginia North as Vulnavia. 93 min. C/Rtg: PG
