During President George W. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign, CBS news producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) and veteran anchor Dan Rather (Robert Redford) ran a story claiming Bush received preferential treatment while serving in the Texas Air National Guard in the early 1970s. Mapes and Rather soon found their careers on the line when the validity of the report is called into question.
