A financially strapped family man (Frank Lovejoy) joins a small-time crook (Lloyd Bridges) for a series of robberies in order to make some quick cash. They wind up behind bars when their plan to kidnap a rich man to hold for ransom results in the death of their victim, a situation made even worse by a reporter (Richard Carlson) whose scathing articles about the pair rile the public into a violent frenzy.
