On a seemingly average morning Eric Linton awakens to a plea from his wife Andrea to sign the divorce papers and allow her to move on with her life. His home is quiet and empty with pictures of his wife and son Mathew, as a constant reminder of what his life once was. As Eric leaves for work he is confronted by Shane, a sketchy stranger who wants to come in from the cold to use a phone. Eric denies the request and Shane pulls a gun forcing his way in. A violent encounter ensues as Eric is knocked unconscious, Shane rips up his sons picture then races through the home stealing his valuables. However, once Shane reaches Erics bedroom, he discovers he has broken into the home of a police officer and is now in way over his head. Trying to quickly escape, Shane is caught off guard by Eric and the tables are turned. Shane awakens tied to a chair in Erics basement. Eric pays little attention while laying down sheets of plastic, readying what looks to be a kill room. Shane quickly grows fearful and explains that he is a product of his upbringing and if given one more chance he would reform himself. As Eric leaves to finish his preparations he tells Shane, that like all other criminals, he is a slave to his impulses and will always be a danger to those around him. Night falls and Eric returns eerily calm. With his head down and full of shame Eric tells the story of his young sons abduction. Shane now sees the extent of his torment and realizes he was dead the moment he knocked on Erics door.
