Closing shop after sitting through a string of unimpressive auditions for his planned adaptation of Sacher-Masoch's erotic novel "Venus in Furs," a Parisian stage director (Mathieu Amalric) is flagged down by a flaky, late-arriving actress (Emmanuelle Seigner) who insists she'd be perfect for the role of the dominatrix. As he wearily agrees to a reading, her subtle exercise of control will make him realize how right she is, in Roman Polanski's absorbing rendition of the David Ives Broadway hit. 96 min.
