Sumptuous adaptation of E.M. Forster's 1905 novel stars Helen Mirren as Lilia Herriton, a widowed early 20th-century Englishwoman who, while on an Italian holiday with a friend (Helena Bonham Carter), falls for and weds a Tuscan man (Giovanni Guidelli) half her age. It’s then that Lilia’s first husband's incensed family travels to Italy in hopes of "straightening her out."
