Mamie Smith (Marion Davies) was plucked from a miserable orphanage existence by kindly Mrs. Caldwell (Hedda Hopper), and she'd become a de facto big sister to her little son Alexander. With her foster mother's passing, she didn't want Zander to know what she suffered--so they packed off out west in search of his no-good father.
